Cruise Essentials: Top 10 Things You’ll Be Glad You Packed

I’m actually writing this from a cruise cabin on the MSC Seashore as we sail toward Mexico. This is one of the few trips I’ve taken without my kids, and while I miss them, it’s been such a treat to experience cruising in a different way. Whether I’m traveling solo, with friends, or with my whole family, one thing stays the same, having the right cruise essentials makes all the difference.

Cruises are one of my favorite ways to travel. You unpack once, wake up somewhere new every morning, and there’s endless food and entertainment right outside your door. But when it comes to packing, it can be easy to forget the little things that make a big difference in your comfort and sanity. After several cruises with my family, including a North Sea adventure, the Panama Canal, and even a trip to Antarctica, I’ve learned what’s worth the space in your suitcase. Here are my top ten must-bring cruise essentials.

Cruise Essential: Document Holder

There is nothing worse than scrambling to find all of the important documents—especially when you’re responsible for more than one person. On family trips, I’ve been the keeper of everyone’s passports, boarding passes, and IDs, and having them spread out in different bags is a recipe for stress. A travel document holder keeps everything in one place so you can grab it quickly at check-in or when heading off the ship.

Cruise Essential: Lanyard for Your Cruise Card

This is a game changer to make sure no one loses their key. Your cruise card is your ID, room key, and onboard wallet—so it’s something you’ll use constantly. One of my friends got me this lanyard set(top,) and another had this version (bottom), which is great because you can just unhook the card when you need it without taking the whole lanyard off.

Cruise Essential: Refillable Water Bottle

Between the heat on deck and long excursions, it’s amazing how quickly you can get dehydrated. We bring this one for adults, but lately my daughter has been taking mine constantly. I think it’s time she gets her own kids’ water bottle! Having our own bottles keeps everyone happy and saves us from buying bottled water.

Cruise Essential: Portable Fan

Cruise cabins can get warm and a little stuffy, especially at night. I’ll admit, I was skeptical the first time I brought a fan, but now it’s non-negotiable. This USB-powered fan has saved my sleep more than once and while cruising, I loved having the white noise, too.

Cruise Essential: Magnetic Hooks & Clips

This is one of those “insider hacks” that blew my mind the first time I learned it. The cabin walls are magnetic! We use magnetic hooks to hang jackets, bags, and hats. With kids, it helps keep things off the floor so the room doesn’t turn into complete chaos. Even when I travel solo, it keeps everything organized.

Cruise Essential: Power Strip (Cruise Approved)

If you’ve ever tried to charge multiple devices in a cruise cabin, you know the struggle. There are usually only one or two outlets for the entire room. A USB-only strip works great for phones and tablets, while this version with plugs gives you more flexibility. Just make sure it’s cruise-approved—surge protectors are not allowed onboard.

Cruise Essential: Lightweight Day Pack

When you’re heading off the ship for excursions, a lightweight backpack is a lifesaver. We use it for sunscreen, water bottles, snacks, and souvenirs. On family trips, it becomes our “catch-all” bag for everything from wipes to extra clothes. Traveling without my kids this time, it’s been perfect for just carrying the essentials without feeling weighed down.

Cruise Essential: Foldable Laundry Bag

With a small cabin and no laundry service unless you pay cruise prices, dirty clothes can pile up fast. We bring a foldable laundry bag to keep everything contained. On our Antarctica cruise, this bag saved me—it kept the kids’ muddy clothes from ending up all over the cabin. Now it comes with us everywhere.

Cruise Essential: Comfortable Walking Shoes

Between wandering the ship and exploring ports, you’ll easily hit thousands of steps a day. A good pair of comfortable walking shoes is worth their weight in gold. I learned this lesson the hard way on my first cruise when I packed only sandals. Now, I never board without supportive sneakers.

Cruise Essential: Playing Cards

Cruises are full of activities, but sometimes it’s nice to unplug. We bring a deck of cards for sea days, downtime, or even long waits before excursions. Some of my favorite memories are of us playing in a quiet lounge while watching the ocean roll by.

Final Thoughts

Packing for a cruise doesn’t have to be stressful. A few smart items make life onboard more organized, comfortable, and fun. With these cruise essentials packed, you’ll be ready to sit back, relax, and enjoy every moment at sea.
